Learning and Instruction

LDT 3: Drawing on learning and instructional theory, create instruction with well-aligned outcomes, activities, and assessments

  • Use a procedural model (e.g. ADDIE or SAM) to guide planning, implementing, and evaluating functions
  • Ensure that outcomes, activities, and assessments are aligned for well-balanced, validated instruction
  • Use theories of learning and instruction to help frame learning needs and guide design decisions

For this competency, I selected two artifacts I developed and delivered in my school. The first is a PBIS (Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports) course for new staff using our LMS, Schoology that I developed for INTE 5200: Crafting eLearning Experiences. Our district gave each building permission to train new staff using their own platforms, so I jumped on this opportunity to develop this course for our staff. I wasn’t comfortable using Schoology and this was a great opportunity to learn more about how to use it effectively with a smaller scale of learners. The course was used in the fall and will be used again in the summer.

The second artifact is for a 4th grade class on Research Tips. This lesson was a collaborative effort with one of my elementary teachers for my SCHL 5913: School Library Field Experience. Since we were in cohorts and this class had already rotated to the library, this lesson was a chance to come to their classroom to deliver a lesson. It was my first “real” chance to collaborate with the elementary staff who still see the librarian as an Educational Assistant (EA) rather than a certified teacher. This experience opened up other opportunities to work with teachers in my building because they now see me as a fellow educator rather than the lady who checks out or reads books in the library.
