I selected two completely different artifacts to support my learning for this competency. The first is a professional development lesson in Media Literacy from INTE 5300: Media Literacy. So much of what I use in my Media class hinges on students knowing how to be safe online and how media influences our actions. This lesson serves as a refresher for our staff so we can have some consistency in our messages.
The second artifact sprang from a traumatic experience at our school. In INTE 6720: Research, I conducted some research on ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and Toxic Trauma to assist our staff and my colleagues as we all experienced a terrible event – the death of a child at the hands of a parent. By informing myself about resources beyond what was being offered at school and by our district, I was able to share these resources with the staff. This event hit right before we were shut down for Covid, so very little resolution came from our shared trauma. Our district did provide a formal professional development session, but it was in two parts and the second came at the beginning of the year. I think this one confused many of our new teachers who were unaware or unaffected by the event so many returning teachers experienced. My hope is to resurrect this training and resource share for our teachers but with an approach that speaks to a wider, more global audience.
